The Technique

Turkish carpet is the use of the double-knotted weaving technique. This special technique has been used by the Turks for centuries and has proven to be the most resilient and durable throughout history. A Rug has three elements. Which are the Horizontal - vertical warp and weft and finally the pile, so the surface of the rug. That why are the Turkish rugs the most durable rugs at the World. Refer to the diagram (left) for a close-up illustration of different weaving techniques.

The Material.

There is three different materials and three different combinations by Turkish rugs. Wool, Silk and Cotton. The oldest and the most known type are Tribal type. What we call Wool on wool rug. The second type is the Wool on Cotton combination. Which are finer rugs then the Tribal rugs. And finally, silk. Silk rugs are the finest rugs all over the world. It's not only the value of the Silk. It's a real Art, and a pleasure for the eyes. A silk carpet can have till to four million knots per cm. And takes really long time to complete. That's surely up to the size and the number of knots per cm.

Clean and Care.

Cleaning is an important step toward the preservation and maintenance of your handmade rugs. There are no hard or fast rules regarding how often you should clean your carpet since each carpet is different, and every household exposes a carpet to varying degrees of wear and dirt but keeping your carpet clean will help prevent long-term damage and maintain its beauty.

Quick cleaning Brush your carpet with a hand broom made of natural bristles, or use an electric carpet sweeper. Don't forget to brush the underlay of the carpet as well as the floor beneath. CAUTION: Frequent use of a vacuum cleaner will eventually loosen the knots and pull the fibers out of the pile. Also NEVER use a revolving brush attachment as it will pull the fibers apart and cause fraying. The nozzle attachment is safest and may be used once a month.

The Dyeing.

A very interesting step is the dyeing process. Also today, the most Tribal rugs will dyed with natural recipes. For sure, not all of them. Actually a Silk rug will never dyed with natural colors. Only with good quality textile dyes. We can say, that the same goes for the Wool on Cotton rugs too.
